The Government should consider legalising the use of parabola to receive satellite TV channels.
The satellite equipment is very popular and widely available at the border town between Sabah, Sarawak and Indonesia.
It is an alternative to the very limited channels that are available on our terrestrial TV. A consumer can even receive up to more than 700 video and radio channels or more depending on the system installed.
In fact, most of the channels that are payable in ASTRO are available on other satellites for free. Some even use the same ASTRO equipment to receive other satellite channels for free with some modifications required.
We can notice this that by looking at the ASTRO dish pointing on the opposite way instead of the usual direction facing the West.
Apart from watching the normal commercial channels on other satellites, the public or satellite TV enthusiasts can also watch raw live news feed, news collection and distribution service. There are also downlink and uplink programs and activities by broadcasters around the world sending news materials to their respective destinations.
The main reasons why the consumers turn to parabola illegally because the growth in satellite TV signals is becoming more available, the start of a fight back against monopoly pay-TV such as ASTRO.
The consumers would try to save as much as possible for the sake of TV entertainment. They are aware that the equipment is illegal but still they go for it. Technology has grown a great deal over the years that consumers are able to have a medium size dish to receive a signal from space to transmit broadcasts.
One doesn't need to install a three-metre dish anymore to operate a fully motorised system, With a fixed system the best still go for a 80cm-1.0m dish. From observation in neighbouring countries, the public there are watching certain encrypted satellite channels for free using a clone card and a specially design pcb card to connect with a PC which then runs the software to unlock the codes.
The public here is warned that the use of these 100% clone card is illegal and they are liable to prosecution by the satellite provider concerned. The public is also warned that before they buy satellite receivers and dishes, they should consult the experts and ask themselves what are the programs or channels they would like to watch?
In fact, there are cases where they can't watch the channels they wanted to due to the different systems that are available. Satellite video signals are transmitted indifferent bands like L, KU, C, S, KA and digital MPEG. And some even require special decoders and smart cards to unscramble their video systems.
The public is taking a risk in getting and buying illegal satellite equipment, decoders and receivers because it's against the law and furthermore no warranty is given for these products. Please check with the relevant authorities such the Custom Department and Ministry of Information on the availability of licences and permits to install one legally.
