KOTA KINABALU: The newly-registered Consumers Front of Sabah (Cfos), a statutory association campaigning for a fair deal for consumers in the state, will be launched after the appointment of its new exco members.

Its president, Nordin Thani, said the registration of the association was approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) under Section 7 of the Societies Act 1966 and the Societies Rules and Regulations 1984 on March 11, this year.

"With the registration of Cfos completed, we hope to launch it as soon as possible for the interest and benefit of the community in the state," said Nordin yesterday.

Cfos' main aims and objectives are to work with any other consumer bodies and the relevant government agencies to promote consumer awareness and to safeguard the interests of consumers in Sabah and to present the views of consumers on all matters of concern to them to the local authorities, state and federal governments and their agencies and other commercial bodies and industries.

It also promotes the interests, experience and views of consumers through public meetings, seminars, exhibitions, publications and other activities deemed fit by the association and will also act as the voice of the consumers and work to secure fair deals on their behalf.

Nordin said that Cfos would also be setting up a cooperative to help the welfare of its members and the daily running of the association.

"Talks and negotiations have already been organised in a few districts in the state to set up village shops under the cooperative. We want it to be run by the community for the community.

"The support from the community, volunteers and prospective funders has been fantastic but what is important now is to focus on the administration of Cfos," he added.

Nordin said Cfos' ordinary membership is open to all Malaysians residing in Sabah aged 18 and above.

Associate membership is open to all registered bodies by the Registrar of Societies which are interested in promoting and working towards the protection of consumers and to improve their awareness and education in the state.

According to him, there are currently 11 registered branches and representatives under the association throughout the state with five more in the process of being registered.

"A membership drive will take place as soon as the association is officially launched.

"The official address, websites, contact numbers and other relevant details of the association will be made known to the public before or after the launching date," he said.
